Dancing In Their Light in the News!
On September 6, I was interviewed by Robert Handa for Asian Pacific America, his long-running weekly program on NBC Bay Area. This program premiered in September 2014 and has spent more than a decade spotlighting AAPI newsmakers, artists, community leaders, cultural events and youth perspectives from throughout the Bay Area.
Robert is one of the Bay Area’s most respected broadcast journalists, with a career spanning more than five decades. He began his television career at KNTV, the NBC Bay Area station, more than 30 years ago, and went on to work at KTVU, KPIX and KQED before returning to KNTV in 2014. He has received multiple Emmy Awards and was named the Associated Press’s 2015 Reporter of the Year.
There is particular resonance in having Robert tell this story. Asian Pacific America was created to provide a television platform for the diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander communities of the Bay Area, and it remains a distinctive program within the region’s television landscape.
And the audience reach is significant. NBC Bay Area/KNTV serves the San Francisco–Oakland–San Jose television market, the #10 television market in the country in the 2024–25 Nielsen season, with approximately 2.54 million TV households.
Our conversation focused on my book, Dancing in Their Light. Robert showed clips from the DITL proof-of-concept trailer and highlighted the audiobook by including a brief excerpt from its introduction. Most importantly, he gave me the opportunity to share that we are working to adapt Dancing in Their Light into a streaming series and invited viewers to visit my website to learn more about the project and how they can support our creative journey.
I’m grateful to Robert for giving me the chance to tell this next chapter of the story—and to begin putting The House of Mah Jong into the public conversation.
